If you live in Knoxville, you know that fall in the Eastern US is one of the best times of year. The leaves change into warm and vibrant colors, and the cooler, comfortable temperatures feel great when exploring outdoors. While Knoxville has plenty of beautiful fall scenery to enjoy, living here also makes it easy to explore other beautiful locations. With convenient access to the interstate system, you can enjoy weekend getaways where the drive is as beautiful as the destination. As Knoxville realtors, we love exploring our hometown and the many nearby cities. Here are our favorite fall weekend getaways from Knoxville.

Abingdon, Virginia
Drive time from Knoxville: 2 hours
Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Abingdon, Virginia is known for the Virginia Creeper Trail, which offers beautiful views for hikers, bikers and walkers. For a full day of sightseeing, you can rent a bike and take a shuttle to the highest point on the trail. From there, you can bike downhill for seventeen miles where you can be picked up again by the shuttle to return to Abingdon. For a more leisurely ride, you can opt to bike only the lower section of the trail from Abingdon to Alvarado where you can request a pickup at Abingdon Vineyards — after you reward yourself with a glass of wine, of course. Abingdon is also home to many highly rated restaurants and the Barter Theatre. After a day on the trail, enjoy dinner and a show on historic Main Street.

Chattanooga, Tennessee
Drive time from Knoxville: 2 hours
Chattanooga, Tennessee is known for its scenic beauty and offers plenty of opportunities to take in stunning fall scenery. From hang gliding to hiking and train rides, there’s something for every type of traveler. For fall colors, you can’t beat any of Chattanooga’s scenic overlooks. One of the most photographed points is Sunset Rock, which is only an eight-minute drive from Downtown Chattanooga. For more scenic overlooks, check out Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain and Cloudland Canyon State Park. If you’re interested in more of a leisurely trip to Chattanooga, take a train ride on the Hiwassee Loop Train and end your day with a local dinner and a comedy show at The Comedy Catch.

Lexington, Kentucky
Drive time from Knoxville: 3 hours
Sipping bourbon with a cool fall breeze in the air sounds like a picturesque fall evening, and there’s no better place to enjoy it than Lexington, Kentucky. Lexington is part of the Kentucky Bourbon trail, so whether you are a bourbon lover or interested in trying something new, you can visit many distilleries during your stay. Book a tour so you can safely visit them all before enjoying a delicious dinner downtown and retreating to your hotel for some rest and relaxation. Lexington is also known as the horse Capital of the World, so make sure you tour a horse farm during your trip.

Highlands, North Carolina
Drive time from Knoxville: 3 hours
Aptly named, Highlands, North Carolina is a mountain town at an elevation of 4,118 ft. This quaint town is home to award-winning restaurants and boutique hotels like Old Edwards Inn and Spa. In Highlands, you can enjoy a mix of outdoor recreation opportunities. Visit Whiteside Mountain, hike to Dry Falls or take a historic walk on the highlands Heritage Trail. After a day of exploring, head downtown to dine and shop at the best local spots, experience a performance at the Mountain Theatre Co or relax with a spa treatment at Old Edwards.
