Life seems to slow down in the best way when you move to East Tennessee, so it’s no surprise why many people choose to retire here. Although life moves at a slower pace in the South, you will never worry about a lack of things to do. East Tennessee offers many ways you can stay happily busy when you retire. Here are a few relaxing recreational activities you can enjoy when you retire in East Tennessee.
Cast a reel in world-class fishing locations.
Anglers from around the country come to fish in East Tennessee’s lakes and rivers, but when you retire to East Tennessee, world-class fishing is only minutes away. According to the Tennessee Wildlife Federation, Fort Loudon Lake is known for bass fishing, but you can catch Bluegill, crappie and sauger too. Melton Hill Reservoir also contains bass, white crappie, skipjack, herring, sauger and stripers. If you prefer trout fishing, head to the Clinch River. If casting a reel on a quiet morning sounds like your dream retirement activity, you can buy or build a home in East Tennessee near one of these beautiful waterways.
Tee up at one of the many local golf courses.
East Tennessee is home to great public, private, and semi-private golf courses, and you can buy a home in one of the many sought-after golf communities to minimize travel time to the course. If you find your perfect property in a non-golf community, no problem! You can become a member at a golf course nearby or schedule a tee time on one of the city-owned golf courses in Knoxville. No matter where in East Tennessee you land, you can be within a short drive to a relaxing day on the green.
Hike local trails and explore the Smokies.
From gentle, beginner-friendly walking trails to mountainous terrain, there is a hiking path for everyone in East Tennessee. When you think of hiking in East Tennessee, you probably think of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With 150 trails, the Smokies are a great place to lace up your hiking boots. However, if driving to the Smokies is a bit far, you can also find hiking trails in many local and state parks. Check out House Mountain, Norris Dam State Park and Big Ridge State Park.
Catch a performance in Downtown Knoxville.
No matter which beautiful East Tennessee city you choose to retire to, you’ll be within driving distance of Knoxville’s vibrant arts and culture scene. In Downtown Knoxville, you can catch musicals, plays, concerts and comedy acts at the Tennessee Theatre, Bijou Theatre and Mill and Mine. You can also enjoy free musical entertainment like live jazz in Market Square and concerts during First Friday Art Walks. If you love the arts, you’ll love living in East Tennessee.
